First Book in America on GODZILLA Director Ishiro Honda

Known primarily for directing such classic Japanese monster movies as RODAN, MOTHRA, ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE and the original GODZILLA, Honda has been a much-overlooked figure in mainstream international cinema.

Turner Classic Movies Day of Terror for Halloween 2010

Having a hard time deciding what movies to watch for Halloween 2010? Does the thought of watching Michael Myers terrorize Haddonfield on October 31st just seem cliche? Not in the mood to watch some gut-munching zombies run amok in the television adaptation of The Walking Dead? If so, Turner Classic Movies may have just what you are looking for.

Each year, TCM puts together an amazing run of horror movies in October, culminating in a weekend-long festival of classic horrors in which the best is saved for Halloween day. This year is no different, with their October 31st lineup featuring a wonderful assortment of terrors from directors Tod Browning, Roger Corman and William Castle, five movies starring Vincent Price, and a triple-feature of haunted houses!

ZOMBIE DIAIRIES 2 Teaser Artwork Rises from Grave

Director Michael Bartlett has returned to film a sequel to his 2006 undead romp THE ZOMBIE DIARIES. The second entry in the series, entitled WORLD OF THE DEAD: THE ZOMBIE DIARIES 2, is currently in production and is scheduled for release sometime in 2011. Teaser artwork (to the right) has already been released to promote the news of the sequel.

Principle photography is about to start on the script by Kevin Gates, though details of the story are being kept under wraps. The original film presented a series of found footage the focused on documenting the rising the a zombie outbreak, much in the same style that DIARY OF THE DEAD and CLOVERFIELD would adapt several years later.

William Lustig’s MANIAC Headed To Theaters for 30th Anniversary

Thirty years ago, William Lustig (MANIAC COP; UNCLE SAM) released on a crowd hungry for more gore the relentless and brutal MANIAC, a film which Siskel & Ebert urged their fans to boycott and had offended moviegoers protesting its showings.

Now, Grindhouse Releasing celebrates the 30th anniversary of one of the most shocking of the 80s slasher films with a brand new 35mm print and limited showings are being booked across the country.

CHILD’S PLAY Remake Held Up Due to Rights Issues

Don Mancini, the writer/director behind the CHILD’S PLAY series since the first film was released in 1988, is looking to give the series a reboot, like so many other icons of the 1980s have been receiving lately. However, there is a major hold up in who owns the rights of the films. MGM current holds the rights of the original film while Universal released the sequels the last of which, SEED OF CHUCKY, came out in 2004.

Despite the hold up as the rights are sorted out, Mancini remains very optimistic about his visions for his pint-sized creation:

“I’m personally open to other things but I think that’s what the studio wants, because [Seed of Chucky] didn’t do very well so I think the feeling is that Chucky’s viability, his future is in the more straightforward horror vein. I was talking about the rights issues before, I don’t think it’s necessarily what we’ll end up doing as a strict remake. I think we’ll reboot it in the sense that it will just be more conventionally scary and it will only be Chucky and we won’t have Tiffany and Glen, but it won’t necessarily be a strict remake.”

Mancini went on to say about the not so-strictly remake:

“We’ve explored a number of different possible scenarios. I’m definitely pushing to go in a very disturbing direction because I feel like if we’re going to go back to it being a horror movie, let’s make it really disturbing.”

Things certainly sound quite positive for our favorite possessed doll!

THE LAST EXORCISM Comes to Blu-Ray January 2011

Everything you believe will be changed this January as Lionsgate releases THE LAST EXORCISM to DVD, Blu-ray Disc, Digital Download and On Demand. This clever, bone-chilling film comes from a collaboration of minds – rising director Daniel Stamm, as well as all-star horror producer Eli Roth (CABIN FEVER, HOSTEL) and the producers of DAWN OF THE DEAD. Hailed as “scary, gripping and very intense!” (Access Hollywood), THE LAST EXORCISM was a festival favorite chosen for the LA Film Festival, Toronto After Dark, Fright Fest and others throughout 2010. The film tells the story of a charismatic preacher expecting to perform a routine “exorcism” on a disturbed religious fanatic but instead he encounters a true evil far beyond his wildest imagination. Both the Blu-ray Disc and the DVD provide a deeper look into the film with two commentaries from the actors, director and producers; a “making of” the film; the 2009 Cannes Film Festival teaser trailer and a featurette that examines those involved in real life exorcisms. The Blu-ray Disc hosts exclusive bonus materials including an additional commentary containing stories from a spiritual warfare counselor, a “haunting” victim and a clinical psychologist; audition footage from Ashley Bell and Patrick Fabian and the theatrical trailer. “The scariest movie of the summer!” (WABC) heads home on January 4th for the suggested retail price of $29.95 on DVD and $39.99 on Blu-ray Disc.

After years of performing “exorcisms” and taking believers’ money, Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) travels to rural Louisiana with a film crew to document what is to be his last so he can dispel what he believes is the myth of demonic possession. The dynamic reverend is certain that this will be another routine “exorcism” on a disturbed religious fanatic but instead comes upon the blood-soaked farm of the Sweetzer family and a true evil he would have never thought imaginable.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller to Become Feature Movie

Michael Jackson’s Thriller was originally released in 1983 as a 14 minute mini-movie and music video directed by John Landis. Now, GK Films is actively working a negotiations deal to bring the dancing zombies to the big screen as a feature-length movie. It is being reported at Fox 2000, Mandate/Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment are also in the mix for the rights deal for a film that could be budgeted at $50 Million.

The plot for the film is being kept closely under wraps, with THE HANGOVER screenwriter Jeremy Garelick set to write and Kenny Ortega set to direct.
